When it was exhibited at the Figge Art Museum two years ago, Rose Frantzen’s nationally acclaimed "Portrait of Maquoketa" was popular.
The Davenport museum now has acquired the multi-panel artwork for its permanent collection, thanks to two anonymous donors, financial support from current and past Figge board members, other supporters and the Figge’s endowment for acquisitions.
"It's a totally unique piece," Figge Executive Director Tim Schiffer said, adding that it's comprised of 180 12 foot-by-12 foot oil portraits of people from Maquoketa, and a 315-square-foot landscape view of Maquoketa painted on 34 vertical panels ranging in length from four to 10 feet and suspended from the ceiling.
"I think it's significant for the Figge to purchase work by an artist in this region," he said, declining to reveal the purchase price. "It's been shown at the National Portrait Gallery. She has a great reputation. I think it resonates really strongly for people in this area." (full article...)
