MAQUOKETA, Iowa — To proponents of the pocket neighborhood movement, good fences don’t necessarily make good neighbors.

Rather, shared amenities such as gardens, playground equipment or a communal barbecue pit help create a “community within a community,” according to Kelley Deutmeyer, executive director of East Central Intergovernmental Association.
The Dubuque-based agency is working with Jackson County and City of Maquoketa officials to create such a 10-home community.

“It’s really a pilot for future development,” said Deutmeyer, adding, “We’re trying to do our project in one community to show that it can work.”
County supervisors have been asked to consider the sale of 2.5 acres of county-owned land to the ECIA-affiliated East Central Development Corp. The land would be sold for $10 — $1 per parcel.

ECIA officials and supervisors have not yet settled on an agreement. (Full Article)
