MAQUOKETA, Iowa — Business was bustling just before noon Saturday at Make A Splash in Maquoketa, as visitors checked out the home decor, gifts and clothing shop.
Outside, families made their way down the street, walking in and out of downtown businesses.
“It was awesome,” said Debbie Shea, owner of Make A Splash. “(I’m) very happy with the turnout.”
Local businesses, organizations, the Maquoketa Area Chamber of Commerce and city officials banded together to bring out shoppers for “It’s a Wonderful Life in Maquoketa.”
The event served as a holiday promotion for Small Business Saturday and a celebration of the reopening of downtown following months of roadwork. Work on the $3.7 million streetscape project is expected to wrap up soon.
“(It’s) just helping to continue to grow our retailers, giving people an opportunity to shop local and support small businesses,” said Matt Notz, executive director of the chamber. “Small businesses are the heart of our community.” (full article…)
