MAQUOKETA, Iowa — A historic Maquoketa hotel has been sold to a relative of a former longtime owner of the building.

Larry Thede bought the Decker Hotel & Restaurant from Maquoketa Betterment Corp., the organization announced Tuesday.

Nicolas Hockenberry, secretary for the group, said the sale closed Monday. The nonprofit organization purchased the property in 2015 to prevent it from being turned over to a salvage auction.

“We feel pretty good about (the sale),” Hockenberry said. “We really think it fulfills our original goal (for the property).”

Thede could not be reached Tuesday for comment.

The facility will be run by Beth Sparby, Thede’s niece, and her mother, Lorene Eno. Another of Sparby’s uncles, Troy Thede, owned the hotel from 2000 to 2010 and currently owns Centerstone Inn & Suites in town, Hockenberry said.

“(Sparby is) very aware of the property and has a lot of experience and expertise that she can pull from her uncle,” Hockenberry said. (Full Article)
