Bridge outside of Sabula to reopen today, restoring access between city, Savanna

SABULA, Iowa -- After more than six months, motorists now can drive across the Mississippi River bridge at Sabula.

A short bridge just outside the Sabula city limits reopened today, restoring access to the U.S. 52/Illinois 64 bridge that spans the river

The Iowa Department of Transportation notes that "some intermittent lane closures will be necessary in the coming days to complete additional cleanup and minor pavement work," but that traffic will be able to cross the bridge during that time. 

That link between Sabula and Savanna had been cut off since February. That's when transportation officials closed the short, 85-year-old bridge just north of Sabula’s city limits after discovering pavement settling. 

Motorists have been forced to take a lengthy detour or use a free ferry service launched earlier this summer, while the timeline for the completion of the new bridge was pushed back repeatedly. 

With the bridge's reopening, officials plan to end the ferry service at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, the Iowa DOT announced today.
